Abstract

The paper presents the origins of sustainable development, which is considered as an instrument for the greening of the economy. Furthermore, it introduces the discussion about defi ning the term “sustainability” in the economy, including the category of the green economy, which has been developed recently. In technical and chemical sciences the effect of “greening” is also observable. The paper discusses important aspects of sustainable development in green chemistry and green engineering, which contribute to solving the three bottom line dilemma in different people’s activities. The last issue described in the article concerns the attempts to justify the need for integration of knowledge coming from different fi elds of science for the challenge of solving the dilemma of energy supply in the modern world
